Ancient House Cafes
As long as your definition of ‘Ancient’ is flexible.
Ancient house-style cafes have a few things in common - a rural ambience, simple country style architecture, and definitely no AC. While the chairs may be a tad uncomfortable, it’s a great change from your typical coffee stop. These are three great examples of cafes that give those country vibes, here in the heart of the metropolis.

This Hoi An-style cafe seriously delivers on the food front, making a particularly great bowl of mi quang and other central region dishes. It gets very busy at lunchtime, and there’s not a lot of good airflow, making mid-day pretty warm. Parking is right inside. I prefer the upstairs balcony, especially with a fan and a refreshing chanh tuyết, frozen lemonade.
Cõi Xưa Cafe
Hours: 7am-10pm
Address: 55 Tân Canh, Tân Sơn Hòa

This isn’t so much ancient, as much as it’s a very country style house in the middle of the city. It’s mostly open air so mornings and evenings are your best bets, but the peaceful atmosphere is top-notch. There is a courtyard level and then a first floor, and both are pretty nice. They also serve a nice selection of vegetarian food from the restaurant down the street.
Cà phê Đỗ-Phủ

Confusingly, there are two of these cafes. Of the two, I prefer this one - it’s far more comfortable, airy, and attractive. They say this is a historic cafe that particularly served Korean soldiers during the war, and they offer broken rice with kimchi as a special. The atmosphere is top notch, lots of great old stuff hanging around on display, and the upstairs has a great collection of seating and a wonderful balcony.
Thanks for joining, and happy eating and drinking out there! I’ll see you next week. :)
